As a historian, Carolyn Baker has a keen eye for current events that are indicators of the collapse we’re seeing all around us. But she’s also a former psychotherapist concerned about how we personally navigate the turbulence and find meaning within it. The author of Sacred Demise: Walking the Spiritual Path of Industrial Civilization’s Collapse, she describes the old story that isn’t working anymore (humans are separate from nature), and the new story we must live by for real sustainability. Her Speaking Truth to Power website is a rich collection of articles reflecting both collapse and preparedness action. Episode 169. [www.carolynbaker.net].

The initiatory ritual that has disappeared from our culture will nbeed to make a comeback if we are to survive as a social animal.
“We have become infantilized by industrial culture” Corolyn Baker
“Great times call for great strength.
Great events create great individuals and great relationships.
The greatness that you carry will never arise under casual or normal circumstances. It must be called out of you by great events and great needs. It must require you to do things that you would be too lazy or indolent to do previously. It must force you to look at the world objectively. It must force you to prepare for a future that you cannot even see at this moment.”

Hi Ed,
The article, to my way of thinking, was right on the money and thanks for the link.

Hi Gary,
I am not aware of the “myth” interview, but I found the following in the archive search section:
Finding a Cure For the Insidious Cancers of “Hope” and “Faith”

Hi Ed,
The link is working just fine now and thanks for the help.
Do you remember the number of Dr. Baker’s previous “myth” interview? I’d like to watch it. Boy did “The Hero with a Thousand Faces” ever change my mind about myths. Silly to sacred they became to me after a long serious read.
Gary
Here I go again after being pulled by the moderator.
Hi Janaia, a great interview. Dr Baker tells like it is, with compassion and and a genuine concern for how we will manage to cope with life after the oil crash. Her comments are well reasoned and based on research and a practical experience in psychology. She covered many aspects of life in the new paradigm, aspects which leaders and community health organisations will have to be aware of if we are to get through with the least trauma.
This interview is in stark contrast to an earlier interview that relied on overly emotional assertions based on myths from a primitive past. Myths that were developed to have a double effect. First by inventing explanations for natural events to an ignorant public and thereby keeping them docile. Secondly to exploit the public for reasons of power and domination. Definitely not what we would want to find after the crash. 🙁
It is luminaries such as Dr Baker that we should be bringing to the fore in the peak everything area, not individuals that through ignorance or guile promote ignorance and superstition.
This interview superbly demonstrates the value of education and sound reasoning. I give this one 10 out of 10.
Hi Gary,
Dr baker’s website URL is now:

No more dubby dubby dubby 🙂
I hope this helps.
Great interview! I really enjoyed the discussion throughout. I like how Carolyn focuses on the spiritual, emotional, and psychological aspects of modern industrial collapse. Those areas aren’t discussed enough, IMO.
Thanks again for putting this together.
Does anybody know if Dr. Baker’s URL has changed since the interview? The link to her web site appears to be broken. Many thanks in advance for the help.
Thank you Janaia, a great interview. Dr Baker tells it like it is, she identifies the areas where problems will be encountered and has some answers for how to cope with the impending hard times. No horoscopes, no “dragon dreaming” no self indulgent sobathons, just really well reasoned answers based on good research and experience. Gems such as Dr Baker are who we should be taking more notice of.
I have noted the websites she mentioned and will be passing them around to others in my Permie group. Judging by this interview, her books won’t spend much time stuck to the shelves down here in Oz.
Fantastic interview! We really enjoyed this topic & hearing Dr. Baker’s perspective. 🙂
A modern Sibyl Skype’s to Peak Moment TV and weaves the collapse of industrial civilization into a grand Jungian tapestry. Brilliant work Carolyn, Janaia, and Robyn. My hat is off to you all.
Congratulations on this great Internet interview! Kudos to Robyn on that technical wizardry! Carolyn Baker touches on all the bases of future collapse. Imagining collapse was a bit difficult when we were often treated to a view of Janaia and Robyn’s beautiful kitchen!
