Dying Consciously in a Loving Community (322)

After a terminal diagnosis, activist Steve Hamm said he wanted to die consciously with his friends around him. Judy Alexander and about twenty friends committed to being his care team. In training meetings with professional end-of-life caregiver Kippi Waters, they learned what to expect, and were invited to express their own fears and concerns. Kippi’s advice: “The most important thing around the dying is to leave our philosophies and the way we think it should look — at the door.” Judy noted that few people are comfortable talking about death, and that being willing to have the conversation is a huge gift. She believes that many people would choose to die as Steve did: at home, surrounded by family and community who team with hospice to keep them comfortable.
